Chapter Thirteen

Melody

She stared at Konrad for a long time after he broke the kiss. Their foreheads rested against one another’s, their chests colliding with each heaving breath.

What was that about?

Better yet, how soon could they do it again?

She smiled, her hand traveling up his chest and around the back of his neck. Konrad shivered as she teased the hair at the base of his scalp, jumping up on her toes to kiss him again. It was simpler this time, short and sweet, just a reassurance that she enjoyed the first kiss as much as she seemed to.

“I—” he started to say, sounding apologetic.

Melody held a finger to his lips. “Don’t. I’ve been wanting you to do that all day,” she said with a smile.

He smiled back, then looked down anyway. “I don’t know what this means or what we’ll do, but we’re going to figure out something, okay?”

Melody nodded, not doubting for a moment that they would. “Let’s go get some food first. That lunch on the beach was a long time ago and not very filling.”

Konrad nodded. “I always think better on a full stomach,” he said, taking her hand and lacing his fingers through hers. It was such a simple casual gesture of intimacy, but still, it made Melody’s heart race.

Who would have thought that she could have these feelings for this man? That she’d be dreaming of a future with him — fighting to make it possible, even.

It seemed impossible. It seemed too fast, too much, but also, much too right to ignore. She guessed those cupids at Celestial Mates really knew what they were doing after all.

Konrad led her through the twisting maze-like tunnels. Up and down different levels, walkways intersecting and diverging seemingly at random. It made her dizzy, but he seemed to know where he was going.

Finally, the raucous sounds of practically a whole city dining together drifted to her ears. It was faint at first, but grew louder as they got closer until the cacophony was deafening.

The dining room itself was massive — at least four stories high with people on different levels at tables laden with steaming aromatic dishes. There didn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason to any of it. There were tables everywhere and balconies seemed to jut out of the walls at odd places, tables perched on them, too. There were people of all ages, from those withered with time to young babies still suckling. Whole families lived here, worked here, and probably died here without ever realizing their dreams. Without ever seeing what they fought for come to fruition.
